Who says Black Americans can’t sue for reparations and win? It’s already happened -- nearly 150 years ago! Pulitzer prize-winning historian Caleb McDaniel joins us to share the story of a true American hero you’ve never heard of: Henrietta Wood.
After gaining her freedom in Ohio in the 1850s, this formerly enslaved woman was later kidnapped and sold back into slavery in the deep South. Wood endured a lifetime of hardships but still managed to get a lawyer and sue her kidnapper in court after the Civil War - and she won. To this day, Wood’s verdict is still the largest amount ever awarded by a U.S. court as reparations for enslavement.
